I checked out a blog recommeded by Farrah, and ended up following a link to a blog that this teacher and his class put together. It's about a guy who lived like a Civil War soldier for two weeks to raise awareness and support for a civil war museum; the blog has his journal copied on it. It is really cool. The website is: http://civilwarsoldier247.wordpress.com/2010/02/24/bretts-final-days-on-picket-duty/#comment-17 It's a really cool and unusual way to get kids interested in history and it shows them that people care about history - it isn't just dead and boring.

  1. I'm so glad you found this! I was just looking at it and it's pretty insanely awesome. I think it might be one of the more interesting ways anyone has ever spent their vacation. Isn't it inspiring and refreshing to see someone who cares *that* much about history? I remember reading an article in National Geographic about what has happened to many historical sites over the years. I can't remember which battle it was, but a very important Civil War battle site is now covered with a parking lot.

And you are right, this might be a really cool way to get kids to take interest in history. We used to do a lot of simulations (although we didn't go all out like this fellow) and I enjoyed them immensely. There's nothing like hands-on learning.
